Young boys of FS Catanico learn the basics of karate

The Physical Education Department with the School of Education, and Research and Social Outreach Office started the tradition of conducting a summer sports clinic as outreach program last year. The activity, called “Hali na, Laro Tayo!” aims to expose the youth to different fields of sports to encourage them to get involved in physical activities, as part of their holistic development.

This year, the sports clinic was conducted in FS Catanico, an interior barangay of Cugman in Cagayan de Oro, from May 5-10. Faculty members Zofea Briosos and Edilberto Peroso taught the basic footwork, correct gripping of racket and moves in Badminton.

Futsal, the indoor version of world renowned Football was taught by faculty members Jeralp Ronquillo and Julie Castillon with help from our soccer varsity player Keevin Hero. They showed the basic footwork and ball handling.

Sensei Jessica Esparrago, along with the XU Karatedo Varsity Team and the Japan Karate Association (JKA), trained the youth and some grown women in the world standard and authentic tradition of Japanese martial arts. They showed enthusiasm in learning the basic techniques of punching and blocking in karate.

“It’s so much fun doing the punching. I can apply it as self-defense if ever my husband hits me when he is drunk,” said one of the women.

To help the youth level up their dancing skills, Alice Artazo and Jomanie Sison. along the Mindanao Unified Dance Sport Coaches Inc. (MUDSCI-C.D.O. Chapter) dancers, introduced some new moves and the correct discipline in Dance sport.

The workshop ended with a show down of basic sports moves and distribution of certificates to the participants. The barangay captain presented the department with a plaque of recognition while Xavier University gave F.S. Catanico a certificate of commendation.
