Xavier University – Philosophy Department in cooperation with the Ateneo Philosophy Club (APC) held its “Pre-law Enrichment Program” (PEP) on August 30 at XU’s AV 8.
Under the auspices of Philo Dept chairperson Dr Jane Gallamaso, fourth year Philosophy majors’ president Nikki Laurio and APC moderator Tyron Keith Maru Sabal, the event was participated in by all pre-law students in philosophy from all year levels. The invited speakers of the said activity were alumni from various batches who graduated with flying colors.
According to Dr Gallamaso, the activity was aimed for the holistic formation of their students and to provide supplementing activities for two subjects—the Pre-divinity and Pre-law tracks— through lectures and sharing of ideas. For this semester, the Pre-law students were given the enrichment activity while in next semester, the department plans to conduct it with the Pre-divinity Philosophy students.
The students listened to the insightful sharing of the resource speakers. Atty Isah Echem-Tangonan said “The study of philosophy is really a continuing search for happiness and meaning in life.”
The second speaker Atty Carlomagno Calingin stated that “If you really want to study Philosophy or something else, first examine yourself. Second, know your roles and play it well. Third, set goals both short term and long term goals, and lastly, take responsibility of your actions and be accountable for them.”
Other speakers who shared their experiences and lessons were Atty Melody Sherry Chan, Atty Lynn Amor Paclar – Panulaya and Atty Loma Linda Aguiñot.
“I did not regret taking up Philosophy, because in Philosophy I found myself. It is the most beautiful course ever on earth,” Atty Panulaya shared fondly.
The activity was successful through the cumulative efforts among the faculty, students and alumni. The Philosophy Dept is looking forward to organize the same enrichment activity soon.
