After its successful run in 2013, National Artist Salvador F Bernal's “Designs the Stage” exhibit will be mounted in various communities nationwide including at the country’s first folkloric museum, the Museo de Oro at Xavier University.

As part of the Lakbay Sining (Arts on the Road) program of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) for this year, the exhibition will be showcased at the Fr Francisco R Demetrio SJ Gallery of the Museo on October 18 - November 8.

The premiere program, to be hosted by Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA), will transpire on Oct 18 at 4PM.  (Admission to the event is free.)

The exhibit aims to introduce and explain the art of theater design through some of the most elaborate and impressive works of Bernal.

The Badong designs will be presented by Dr Nicanor G Toingson and Gino Gonzales

‘Guru of contemporary Filipino theater design’

According to Bernal’s profile on the website of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), he is a theater designer who has conceived more than 300 original productions since 1969 and he has been acknowledged as the “guru of contemporary Filipino theater design.”

Bernal served as an educator for budding designers at the University of the Philippines (UP) and Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), and he was the man behind the inception of the CCP Production Design Center.

The National Artist also organized the Philippine Association of Theatre Designers and Technicians (PATDAT) in 1995 and he has introduced Philippine theater design to the rest of the world through the Philippine Center of Organization Internationale des Scenographes, Techniciens et Architectes du Theatre (PCOISTAT).

Design workshop at XU

After Oct 18, admission to the Bernal exhibit will already require an entrance fee of Php50.00 inclusive of a tour to Museo’s Exhibit Room 1 - The Ethnohistory of Northern Mindanao and Exhibit Room 2 – The Ethnology of Mindanao.

Following the Bernal exhibit is a workshop on production design with Gino Gonzales on November 7-8 at the SBM-AVR 8 of XU.
