The Kristohanong Katilingban sa Pagpakabana – Social Involvement Office (KKP-SIO) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of the Collaborative Service Learning Program of Xavier University for 2014-2015.

The ceremony was frontlined by XU president Fr Roberto “Bobby” C Yap SJ on September 25 at the presidential board room.
 
CSLP is a curriculum-based service learning experience for the students from various academic disciplines.

As part of its dynamics, the program will take the participants to communities and institutions partnered by XU to enter in its pursuit of facilitating dialogue education – a way of learning that brings theoretical premise into proactive social relevance.

Various partner institutions and communities for the CSLP 2014-2015 signed the said MOU to help facilitate learning for XU students while pushing for integral community development at the time.

The Humanitarian Efforts to Lessen Poverty of Underprivileged Children in the Philippines (HELP) Foundation, based in Talakag, Bukinon, will engage Computer Studies (CS) students with their database management system while Chemistry students will conduct water analyses for San Isidro, Talakag, Bukidnon.

XU and the Municipality of Alubijid agreed to create the “Identity of Alubijid” as a project for Development Communication students to showcase the features and lives of the people of Alubijid through photo essays and exhibits.

Barangay Carmen and Camaman-an will host Biology students for their dengue surveillance and control program and ovi-trap installation while Economics students will be assigned to do cost benefit analysis on the implementation of ovi-traps for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Xavier Ecoville Homeowners Association (XEHA) and Brgy Lumbia will engage CS students into their multimedia production for solid waste management; Biology students into their dengue mosquito surveillance and control program  and ovi-trap installation; Agriculture students into urban gardening, vermi composting and the conceptualization of the Xavier Ecoville Park; and Education students and members of the Robogals organization will host tutorials on National Achievement Test (NAT), parenting workshops and values formation seminars.

Robogals is “an international, non-profit, student-run organization that aims to increase female participation in Engineering, Science and Technology through fun and educational initiatives for girls in primary and secondary schools.”

The Governance and Leadership Institute (GLI) of XU will  also conduct training on youth organizing and policy-making for XEHA and Brgy Lumbia.

On the other hand, the local government unit of Cagayan de Oro City through its Hapsay Dalan Task Force and Shelter and Housing Department (SHD) will engage CS students into the web-based real-time traffic information system of CDO’s central business district areas, web-based information response system for emergency response vehicles and medical experts, and motorela routes layer of our urban road network.

In addition, XU – Engineering Resource Center (ERC) will conduct shelter mapping for CDO relocation site phases 1 and 2 at Brgy Indahag and Brgy Canitoan in Calaanan.

CSLP’s underlying principle is entwined with the characteristics of Jesuit Education that deems educational formation of individuals as a means of preparation for them to become apostolic instruments “in service of the church and country as it serves the human communities.”
