Empowering Filipino Migrant Families: Financial Literacy, Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Training Program for Families of Overseas Filipinos
VISION
FLSE envisions Filipino migrants and their families united towards supporting each other in becoming empowered and highly respected members of society, consciously contributing to nation building.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM
The Financial Literacy, Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship (FLSE) Training Program for OFW families started as an offshoot of the Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship (LSE) Training Program that was initiated in 2008 in Rome, Italy.
The LSE/FLSE is a collaborative effort of CSOs, academic institutions, private sector and government agencies. As of May 2014, there are 23 batches in 11 cities outside the Philippines and 3 pilot programs within the country: Manila, Davao and Iloilo.
FLSE is expanding in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and in the cities of the Philippines where there are large concentration of Filipino migrants and OFW families.
FINANCIAL LITERACY
The program educates OFWs and their families to handle their financial resources well and be economically secure for reintegration and retirement in the Philippines. The module discusses subjects like migration processes, personal financial management (e.g. getting out of debt, managing expenses), savings, investments and sustaining financial gains.
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
This promotes OFWs and their families to tap into their potentials for engaging in additional and/or alternative livelihoods. The module delves into the concepts and practices of social entrepreneurship, understanding of social issues, opportunity recognition, creative thinking and development business plan elements. Trainees will then present a social enterprise business plan or a non-profit project to integrate their learning.
LEADERSHIP SKILLS TRAINING
It empowers overseas Filipino workers and their families to see themselves as agents of change and transformation. This module covers topics such as awareness of self and others, effective communication skills, conflict management, team-building and appreciative inquiry.
