“After its founding in Bangkok 10 years ago, the science film festival gains more and more attention and success every year. The main goal is to give the younger generation access to science to awaken their interest and motivate them to pursue a career in this field,” said Dr Petra Raymond, director of Goethe - Institut Philippinen.
The Office of the International Cooperation Network (OICN) and Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) host the opening program and screening of “The Joy of Logic” and the rest of the featured films of the said festival on November 27 at the Xavier University Little Theater (XULT).
Dr Raymond continued: “This year’s festival highlights new technologies that will shape our future. Technologies are developing with a breathtaking pace and new scientific fields like gentech, nanotech, synthetic biology, graphene, algae fuel and quantum computers are taking center stage.”
The Science Film Festival 2014 showcases the theme “Future Technologies”—an advancement rooted from the theme “Renewable Energy” in 2013. This event marks the 5th time for the Philippines to participate in this festival.
“These developments in the world of science and technology present humanity not only with countless possibilities, but also serious challenges and responsibilities. It is because of this fact that we believe in the importance of early science education, and that we strive to provide alternative means in imparting the lesson of science to the younger generation. Their scientific understanding is a curricular factor deciding the future of a country and the main goal of our festival.”
The regular screening of the festival is slated on November 28-29, 9AM to 5PM at the XULT and on December 4-6, 9AM to 5PM at AVRs 6 and 7.
