Xavier University – Governance and Leadership Institute (XU-GLI) conducted the training on health governance under the Municipal Leadership and Governance Program (MLGP) on March 24-27 at the Apple Tree Resort, Opol, Misamis Oriental.

The training was the first module of MLGP, a leadership certificate program of five (5) stakeholders: XU-GLI as training provider, Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF), Department of Health (DOH), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the local government units of Misamis Oriental.

MLGP aims at improving health outcomes through an empowering leadership and governance, enhanced local health systems, active community participation and service delivery at the local level.

It is also geared towards creating an immediate impact on achieving related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) such as the reduction of infant mortality rate (IMR) and improving maternal health in 609 identified priority municipalities nationwide that need to improve in their local health systems by the end of 2015.

MLGP participants were the local chief executives, the municipal health officers, and DOH representatives from Lugait, Salay, and Sugbongcogon of Misamis Oriental.

The three mayors who completed the training course were Mayor Wellie Lim of Lugait, Mayor Romeo Gue of Salay, and Mayor Jerome Lagbas of Sugbongcogon. Vice Mayor Mildred Lagbas-Mondigo of Sugbongcogon also completed the training course.

GLI continues to advance XU’s governance and health themes under XU’s Research and Social Outreach (RSO) cluster.
