The Center for Local and Regional Governance (CLRG) of the University of the Philippines conducted a two-day seminar-workshop on effective local governance for the local government unit of Malita, Davao del Sur on April 23 -24 at the Paradise Resort, Samal Island, Davao del Norte.

As part of the workshop, XU-GLI director Dr Dixon Q Yasay gave a talk on municipal-barangay relations where he inspired the local leaders to synergize their directions, resources and actions to better serve their communities.

Considering Malita’s poverty incidence estimate of more than 60% based on the National Statistical Coordination Board’s latest survey, Yasay challenged them to prioritize on poverty reduction.

He also emphasized on the critical role of barangay governance in influencing behavioral change of the communities and showed the participants some models for replication in their LGU.

The workshop was held in partnership with the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) which has been supporting select LGUs on improving their capacities for an effective local governance.

XU-GLI’s commitment to improve local governance has encouraged SMC to make initial proposals for future engagements in areas where their major business ventures are located.
