Cagayan de Oro CIty will launch “Himugso” in celebration of the 117th Philippine Independence Day on June 12 and the 65th anniversary of the Declaration of the City Charter on June 15.

A local term for “giving birth,” Himugso carries a tagline: “Birthing a City. Birthing a Nation. Birthing Tomorrow.”

To honor the historic events in the journey of our country and city, the organizers have lined up a rundown of activities to highlight the two anniversaries, which goes through a long weekend (from June 12 to 15).

There will be a film festival of CDO’s indie short filmmakers, photo exhibits, a balak (elocution) contest and cultural shows at Kiosko Kagawasan in Plaza Divisoria, a search for the city's singing ambassador, free museum tours, a tribute to the city’s development partners and the 65th Charter Day Parade, among others.

The activities will also include the participation of several establishments with a citywide sale at malls, hotels and restaurants.

City Mayor Oscar Moreno will also deliver his annual report on June 15 at Kiosko Kagawasan in Plaza Divisoria.

In a letter, Himugso 2015 chairperson Eileen E San Juan said: “With all of these activities and participation from various sectors in our community, we plan to carry on into the future years the Himugso brand of events to highlight the city’s tourism promotions.”

Xavier University is one of the city’s active development partners with its Research and Social Outreach (RSO) programs in five thematic areas: food security, health, environment, governance, and peace.

The RSO cluser is encouraging the members of XU community to join in the celebration as part of the greater societal engagement with our local government unit. (-SJP)
