The Collaborative Service Learning Program (CSLP) projects for the current school year were formally launched through the signing of the memorandum of agreement between Xavier University’s Kristohanong Katilingban sa Pagpakabana – Social Involvement Office (KKP-SIO) and various community partners.

The ceremony was frontlined by XU president Fr Roberto “Bobby” C Yap SJ on July 21 at XU AVR 1 and attended in by students, faculty, staff and deans of different colleges.

CSLP is a curriculum-based service learning experience for the students from various academic disciplines. As part of its dynamics, the program will take the participants to partner communities and institutions in pursuit of facilitating dialogue education — a way of learning that brings theoretical premise into proactive social relevance.

The projects agreed upon were: (1) GIS dengue mosquito surveillance and control - ovi-trap installation in barangays Gusa and Lapasan with the students from the College of Arts and Sciences; (2) nutrition program at Sitio Calaanan, Brgy Canito-an with the Nursing students; (3) Talungan Learning Center for the Talungan Homeowners Association with the XU United Arts and Sciences Student Council (UNITAS); (4) community exposure on solid waste management with CDO City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) for Agriculture and Development Communication students; and (5) micro-enterprise development and management of Brgy Mabuhay Baungon in Bukidnon with Agricultural Economics students.

These projects are also supported by the city government of CDO and XU’s Research and Social Outreach (RSO) cluster.

In sum, there are 35 projects under CSLP aimed at facilitating the learning of XU students while pushing for integral community development at the same time.

CSLP’s underlying principle is entwined with the characteristics of Jesuit education that deems educational formation of individuals as a means of preparation for them to become apostolic instruments “in service of the church and country as it serves the human communities.”
