The College of Engineering staged its Final Year Project Display (FYPD), an exhibit of the best outputs of its graduating students, at the Magis and Student Entrepreneurship Center (SEC) walkway on Feb 19.
With the theme “Engineering Solutions with the Community,” the FYPD, an annual showcase by and competition among graduating Engineering students, aims to develop sustainable technologies that will benefit communities’ livelihood and improve their quality of life.
Of the 54 entries in the FYPD this year, only six were shortlisted for the competition after thorough screening.
Three notable integrated math and science enthusiasts made up the panel of judges, namely XU College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr Juliet Dalagan, XU Biology department and Kinaadman Research Center’s Dr Astrid Sinco and Outstanding XU Alumnus Awardee Engr Oriel Waga.
Civil Engineering students Shaira Baang, Sam Mangubat, Jenessa Lavin, and Mark Aldrich Go were declared winners for their case study on “Watershed and flood plain modeling of the Bitan-ag drainage basin,” which sought to address the flooding problem at the Lapasan – CM Recto Highway. The winning team received a cash prize of Php15, 000.00.
College of Engineering Dean Dr Hercules Cascon is grateful for the success of this year’s FYPD.
“The FYPD is one way of training our students in presenting their work to the public” he said. Cascon emphasized that the faculty makes sure, through faculty evaluation meetings, that the projects are implemented well and efficiently.
In the next years, the College of Engineering looks forward to expanding the scope and venue of the annual FYPD.
“Given the many projects included, we hope to move the presentations next year outside Xavier so people from outside the university can also see the outputs,” said Engr Rogelio Golez of the Mechanical Engineering department.
