The fourth year Development Communication students of Xavier University mounted the last SYAGIT exhibit at the Lim Ket Kai Center from March 10 to 11.

With the theme, “Komunidad ipadayag, panginabuhian ipa-uswag!”, this year’s SYAGIT (shout) featured the completed works of DevCom students majoring in Development Journalism (DevJourn) and Educational Communication (EduCom) in collaboration with the Mindanao Alliance of Self Help Societies, Inc Southern Philippines Educational Cooperative Center (MASS-SPECC).

In support of MASS-SPECC’s aim to “help bring inclusive growth to farmers that mostly comprise the rural poor” through the Agriculture-based Enterprise System Program (AgriBEST), students produced social marketing campaign posters, brochures and audio-visual presentations that highlighted the significance of value chain, natural hog-raising, and cluster enterprise of cooperative members and farmers from the municipalities of Baungon, Impasug-ong, and Lantapan.

EduCom majors produced videos zeroing in on the theme while DevJourn students displayed community newspapers featuring the events and issues that revolved around the local communities of Bulua, Camaman-an, Carmen and Puntod.

DEVCOM FACES. The faculty members of XU's Development Communication department cut the ribbon during the opening ceremony of the 8th SYAGIT exhibit.

Local products such as pots and bibingka from Bulua and life vests made out of recycled plastic bottles from Carmen were also presented during the exhibit to showcase the original products in each community.

DevCom faculty member Imma Rae Gatuslao mentored DevJourn students on the management and production of community newspapers while instructor Eric Anthon Janubas taught EduCom majors production and evaluation of educational communication media.

The SYAGIT exhibit was the culminating event of the Communication Strategies class of professor Ma Theresa Rivera for both DevCom majors.

After eight installments, this year’s SYAGIT served as the last exhibit of its kind by DevCom seniors as the new curriculum has removed the two specializations starting SY 2013-2014.

COMMUNITY STORIES. Guests at SYAGIT 2016 read one of the community newspapers produced by DevJourn majors, featuring local events and issues.
