Xavier University Ateneo Diplomatic Corps, a UNESCO-accredited student organization in the Philippines, received two recognitions during the 2016 International Assembly of Youth held at Cebu Normal University from September 20 to 23.
ADC bagged the 2016 Outstanding UNESCO Club Award for its consolidated efforts from the previous administration (SY 2015-2016) up to the present.
The award is given annually to ten best performing member clubs of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. ADC ranked sixth in the overall ranking, the only awardee from Region 10 and one of the two UNESCO clubs from Mindanao.
In addition, UNESCO conferred a “Certificate of Good Standing” to ADC for continuously initiating student-led activities in consonance with the ideals and principles of the said UN agency.
ADC has underscored its strong commitment in frontlining the essence of education, science and technology, and culture in their projects at the grassroots level.

The four-day IAY centered on the theme “Championing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Grassroots Action by, of, and for all,” which was aimed at bringing the works of UNESCO closer to the community and recognizing the important roles of the civic society groups, governmental organizations, and academic institutions in working together to provide a channel for communal engagements and initiatives.
The said event drew together more than 300 participants from UNESCO-accredited clubs and youth organizations.
The first plenary session covered the role of culture and the arts on sustainable development, presented by Bohol-based Kasing Sining artistic director Ludgardo L Labad.
During the committee resolutions conducted at the assembly, ADC participants took part in developing draft resolutions which will form part of the conference report to be submitted to UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines.
Breakout sessions also paved the way to interschool talks through sharing of ideas and best practices to enhance the understanding of grassroots engagements of various UNESCO-accredited organizations in the country.∎
