XAVIER CRUSADERS. Xavier Ateneo Junior and Senior High School Crusaders win big in DepEd-X meet and Loyola Cup.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan's Junior and Senior High School Crusaders had been successful in their latest campaign in the different events of the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Athletic Meet and Loyola Cup Karate Tournament.

The Cagayan de Oro Athletic Association (COAA) hosted the recently concluded DepEd-sanctioned athletic competition held in various sporting venues within the City of Golden Friendship.

The Lady Crusaders Futsal Varsity Team once again asserted their dominance and successfully defended their regional title as champions. They are set to represent Northern Mindanao in the forthcoming Palarong Pambansa in Vigan, Ilocos Sur this April.

The Lady Crusaders Futsal Varsity Team is composed of Eunice Roxanne R Eduave (team captain), Bridget Ann G Estrada, Jillian Nirelle S Bergado, Leilani Liana Y Valbuena, Lourinne Jiuseppe C Lazo, Megan Faye L Wong, Monina Marcy F Alcober, Nizza Jorj C Lazo, Zippy Moss H Medalla, Frances Caroline A Acelo, Maria Chantal P Van Ommeren, and Melgrace C Camarillo.

The Lady Crusaders Futsal Varsity Team won gold medals in the said event.

Niño T Lazo serves as the head coach of the futsal team, while Jerney John C Miaco and Kristina S Sancebutche are their assistant coach and chaperon, respectively.       :

Besides the XU high school futsal female players, the Lady Crusaders Badminton roster will also advance to the Palarong Pambansa. The team includes Maria Lourdes R Babanto, Maxene Renee B Olango, Missy B Cervantes, and Nevie Jane G Natan. Ricky S Tadlip and Jocelyn L Bangquiao served as their coach and chaperon, respectively.  

Part of the COAA delegation that will represent the Swimming Girls’ Team of the region in the Palarong Pambansa is Cecile Andrea Mole, who also took home several medals. Swimmer Nicolai Chiong also won in the boy’s category during the said DepEd meet.

Both Mole and Chiong, who are under the tutelage of head coach Jackielou B Neri, are also qualified for the Palarong Pambansa.

Richard Miguel Lim of the Crusaders Taekwondo Sports Club also won in taekwondo event of the Dep-Ed meet. 

Wendell Beja serves as Lim’s coach.


KARATE WINNERS. Reinhardt Angelo Gomez (Gr9-De Vera) won in the Kumite Boys Sparring Open Belt category, while Jheskay Aden H Esparrago (Gr8-Bobola) triumphed in the Kata Girls and Kumite Girls Sparring, both in Brown Belt category. Supplied photo. 

The victorious campaign of the XUJHS didn’t end at the DepEd Regional Athletic Meet. During the 1st Loyola Cup Karate Tournament last month, held at the XU Main Covered Courts, two young Crusaders won medals in different categories.

Reinhardt Angelo Gomez (Gr9-De Vera) won in the Kumite Boys Sparring Open Belt category, while Jheskay Aden H Esparrago (Gr8-Bobola) triumphed in the Kata Girls and Kumite Girls Sparring, both in Brown Belt category.

Interested junior high school students may now enroll in the Xavier Ateneo Karate Sports Club. To sign up, contact the coordinator of XU High School Athletics Office situated on the 2/F Faber Building, right across the Book Center Office.

Xavier Ateneo’s Varsity Athletics Program (VAP), in their official announcement to the academic community, thanked the Parent Support Group (PSG), XUHS alumni, PSTAG & PTC, XUJHS and XUSHS administration, the VP for Basic Education Office, and "Tailor Made by Olive" (official outfitter of the athletes) for their generous support for the young Crusaders.
