Forty-one coaches recently participated in a two-day badminton teaching workshop, a certification event facilitated by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) through its Shuttle Time Program and the University Athletics Office of Xavier Ateneo.

The workshop, held at the XU Gymnasium and Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) conference room, was attended by local coaches from Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin, Gingoog City, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Oroqueita, and Pagadian, and international coaches from Ethiopia and Russia.

“Badminton is for everyone,” XU Athletics Office director Dr Vincent Ll Padilla said. “The most interesting thing about this event was being able to utilize our available local resources as equipment for badminton, in lieu of expensive equipment.”

The main objective of the workshop was to equip coach-participants on the new trends in teaching and propagating the sport of badminton.

Part of the said event was also teaching kids from Corrales Elementary School for half a day on the basics of badminton.

Leo G Pollentes from the Philippine Sports Institute Regional Program Office of the Philippine Sports Commission and Ian Gil Piencenaves from the Regional Development Office of Southeast Asia Region for Badminton Asia were present at the event.

The workshop was organized by the XU Athletics Office, in partnership with the Badminton World Federation, the global governing body for badminton and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC). BWF regulates, promotes, develops, and popularizes the sport globally and organizes inspiring world events.

“We are happy that we have met and trained coaches, mostly DepEd and private school teachers, not just how to teach badminton, but how to make it fun,” Padilla said.∎
