Dr Shierlyn S Paclijan and Engr Ingrid Yvonne A Madrial of the College of Engineering of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan participated in a series of teacher training and coaching sessions for the development and teaching of Moodle-based online learning modules aimed at developing the multi-competency skills of engineering students of the Asian partner universities.

The five-day teacher training session was held last April 1-5, 2019, in Burapha University, Bangkok. Three months after, the coaching session was held  in Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia last July 8-12, 2019.

Dr Paclijan and Engr Madrial participated in the activities together with other faculty member represetatives from each of the GECKO partner universities from the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Two of the European partners (Université de Montpellier in France and the Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia in Spain) sent their experts, Professor Emmanuel Houzé of UM and Professor Pilar Rodriguez Arancon of UNED, as facilitators of the training and coaching sessions.∎

Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan is all set to run an online learning class called "Professional Engineering Development" on Wednesday, January 22. It will be participated by 30 engineering students from six different programs (Civil Engg, Chemical engg, Electrical Engg, Mechanical Engg, Industrial Engg, and Electronics Engg).

The 45-hour online course is composed of three learning modules, namely, Professional Communication, Managing Teams and Projects, and Engineering Innovation.

The online course will be conducted by faculty members composing the GECKO team (Dr Shierlyn Paclijan and Dr Hercules Cascon from the CHE department, Engr Ingrid Yvonne Madrial from the IE department, and Engr Gerardo Doroja from the College of Computer Studies).

The best six students who will complete the online course will become XU’s representatives to the GECKO Summer School in July 2020 where they will learn and collaborate with other students from Thailand and Indonesia through a start-up challenge competition.

The development of the online learning modules were done by a collaborative team composed of engineering professors from the partner Asian universities in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, under the mentorship of their counterparts from the European universities in France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Lithuania. This project is funded by Erasmus+.

From the eight Asian university of the Erasmus+-funded GECKO project where XU is one of the partner universities, six faculty members were invited for an observation week in Uppsala University, Sweden, held on May 13-17, 2019.

Engr Ingrid Yvonne A Madrial of the Industrial Engineering Department - College of Engineering, represented Xavier Ateneo, along with representatives from Ateneo de Manila University, Ubon Ratcathani University (Thailand), Kasetsart University (Thailand), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia), and Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia).

During the observation week, Uppsala University shared some examples of how they prepare students for global employment and how they operate their internationalization programs.

Uppsala University is a research university and it ranks among the world's 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings.

A two-day visit to the Department of Engineering Sciences was also organized, where they discussed how they teach professional skills and soft skills in their integrated curriculum.

The participants were also toured around the university’s innovation office and business incubator and they were provided with some inspirational tools for how to promote innovation and strengthen university-industry relations.

The GECKO participants had an opportunity to network and exchange experiences and best practices with participants of other capacity building projects of Uppsala University, namely the Erasmus+ International Staff Training Week and the Erasmus+ CBHE project EASTEM (Euro-Asian Collaboration for Enhancing STEM Education.)

Engr Madrial presentd the XU-GECKO Project and its progress in a meeting attended by the ambassadors of Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippine Trade & Investments Promotion Officer for the Nordic Countries.
