PROPONENT: Xavier University – McKeough Marine Center

Rationale:

Mangroves are vital coastal ecosystems that provide numerous ecological, economic, and social benefits, such as habitat for marine life, carbon sequestration, and stabilization.  Despite its importance, they face significant anthropogenic and natural threats. To counter these threats and promote mangrove restoration, nurseries have been established along Macajalar Bay. These nurseries play a crucial role in propagating mangrove species and supporting reforestation efforts in degraded areas. Monitoring the established mangrove nurseries in Macajalar Bay is essential to ensure the success of these restoration initiatives.

Project Description and Objectives

The project aims to monitor and evaluate the health, growth, and survival rates of mangroves, and the infrastructure of the nurseries situated along Macajalar Bay. These nurseries are pivotal for the restoration and conservation of mangrove ecosystems. By conducting regular assessments, the project seeks to gather data that will inform and enhance nursery management practices, identify and address potential issues including the infrastructure, and ultimately support the success of mangrove restoration efforts in the region.

Expected Results:

The expected results include detailed insights into mangrove growth rates, survival rates of propagules, health status assessments, and actionable recommendations to optimize nursery management and support effective mangrove restoration in Macajalar Bay.
